Surfing Off Currumbin Rock, from the iconic "Surfing Australia in the 60's" Series by Gary Birdsall

Currumbin is famous for the classic right hand wave break that forms off "Currumbin Rock" From time to time a these awesome waves form from a storm of the NSW coast in the winter. Garry recounts his memories, Wave after wave lines up matching in from the horizon was an overwhelming challenge that few surfers could resist. Launching from Currumbin Rock into these huge swells after a storm those winters days were never long enough.

In the foreground is Currumbin Creek an area popular with families who would camp nearby and a place where fishermen launched their boats. A collection of cars from that era, a 1960's VW Beetle, FJ Holden and a station wagon, the iconic Kombi Bus, a caravan being pulled and some fishing boats on the higher ground.

Garry was born in Sydney where surfing is a national pastime (in his words). He spent all his leisure time as a youth on the beaches surfing. He was one of the pioneers of Malibu surfboard riding.  Garry’s surfing ability was so good that he competed in numerous Australian and world surfing events. He was the first artist in Australia to do airbrushed paintings on surfboards. Most of his life he’s worked in the surfing industry form board building to wholesale & retail sales.

Today, Garry paints in his Sydney based studio. He uses a variety of mixed media but mostly favours the technique he used in  “Cronulla Point Going Off”  which is a combination of opaque and translucent  watercolours. He’s still out actively surfing and many of his painting are inspired by the magic of the ocean and his love of riding waves.
